The Battle of Pochantus
After several defeats the Union forces fell back to their defensive works around the town of Pochantus.
The Union intial setup in their defensive works with artillery to the front and supporting armor and infantry safely out of sight behind the hills.
The 30 pounder Parrot fires.
Damaging the gun on the CSL Mississippi (which was repaired the next turn on a lucky die throw).
Confederates advance.
Confederate line of battle.
After several turns of long-range fire with little results the CSL Arizona advanced and was hit by the Napoleon, rupturing a steam-pipe and killing all the crew.
The Napoleon firing the killing shot.
Half the crew of the 30 pounder dies from a shell from the CSL Mississippi.
The Driller advances on the CSL Mississippi.
And destroys it, causing the crew to bail out.
The Confederates continue to advance.
The Lt. Pixley in the Steam Suit falls to long range rifle fire.
After several turns of breaking down and restarting and breaking down again the cannon armed Steam Charger finally joins the Union battle line.
The Driller knocks out the crew in one of the Nordenfelt armed landships.
And then is destroyed by the rocket armed Zouave.
The Union center is held by what is left of the 30 pdr crew and two steam chargers (one armed with a Gatling and one armed with a light rifled cannon).
Teh ten pounder Parrot crew survives shot and shell (at least five saves on a save of six) and twice knocks the commander from one of the Nordenfelt armed landships.
The flamthrower armed hero takes out the Gatling armed Steam Charger.
Confederates advance.
The crew of the 30 pdr falls to rifle and Nordenfelt fire. Reduced to one hero, two squads of infantry and one landship the Union falls back (run away, run away) leaving the Confederates victorious on the field.
This game was run with the rule that a +0 SRM or better weapon rolled on the Catastrophic chart when penetrating and on the Penetrating chart when making a glancing hit. This meant that four landships actually were destroyed or had their crew killed (though in one case crew from a destroyed landship manned the gun on a landship with a dead crew) and one other had its crew incapacitated for a couple cards. This took concentrated fire from two medium, one heavy, and one light cannon plus an attack by a drill-armed Mehanical Man (the Lightning cannon once again proved to be of little use).
